When I was younger I used to get very fearful and concerned about world events and the way the media would paint a ‘doomsday’ picture around each one. Yet 40 years later, here we are having overcome every calamitous event and we have yet to descend into worldwide oblivion. In 1969, I’ve used the analogy of US presidential terms to depict the sometimes irrational fear we have of the changing times in which we live but that really the only thing we have to fear, is the fear itself.

In nineteen hundred & sixty nine

Everything was dandy everything was fine

Man went & walked upon the moon

Just as JFK said he would do

Tricky Dick was the main man

Spiro Agnew his right

Vietnam was in full swing

We wondered what the seventies

Would bring

It was the end of the age of innocence

It was the start of the end of eloquence

No-one could have dreamed what the future would spawn

As the final years of the millennium dawned

In nineteen hundred & seventy nine

Everything was dandy everything was fine

Apart from some hostages in Teheran

That fundamentalists would dare to harm

Jimmy Carter at the fore

Campaigning along the Jersey shore

Another decade on the horizon

Another generation to enwisen

In nineteen hundred & eighty nine

Everything was dandy everything was fine

Tiananmen Square was on TV

A student & a tank there to see

Bush Snr king of the free world

With Saddam Hussein about to unfurl

The final stretch before the big one

We wondered whether it would in fact come

In nineteen hundred & ninety nine

Everything was dandy everything was fine

The terrorists were held at bay

They didn't really have too much to say

Billy Boy was in the White House

Quietly creeping about just like a mouse

The last was here & in a second would be first

As the new century arrived unrehearsed
