Aucklanders will know Karangahape Rd as a strip of many colours, some good and some not so, which has always been a centre for diversity and challenge. I remember on the odd occasion when I was in my early teens driving with my family down K’Rd (as it is affectionately known) after a night out and trying to make sense of all the sights and sounds I experienced. I found it particularly interesting and in some cases quite amusing to my adolescent mind and I often wondered about the lives of the folks I saw and how they contrasted to my own.

Eyes on the road

Not on the pavement

The clientele all

From the basement

The myriad rains

Of sights & sounds

Pour from the shutters

Of the windows found

Smiles on faces

Huge white grins

Hiding away from

The multitude of sins

It's a colourful page

The history speaks

In the early seventies

Acceptance seeks

Who's your mama

Who's your daddy

When cruising down

Karangahape Rd

Sadness though

Behind every door

The broken hearts

All know the score

Yet the sun goes down

On the lost horizon

To jump start the mind

And the flesh enliven

When it all seems so ridiculous

And the darkness overtakes

The word is bright and the second sight

The presence and power it makes

Who's your mama

Who's your daddy

When cruising down

Karangahape Rd

Make it quick

Make it snappy

When cruising down

Karangahape Rd
